Step Four – Train your Hosts and Helpers
|
Every small group host and helper will attend three training sessions each time you run the Alpha course. The training session DVD's are found on The Alpha Course Small Group Leaders Training.
Use this DVD to train your entire Alpha team prior to running the Alpha course. Two of the sessions, Leading Small Groups and Pastoral Care are intended to be viewed before the course begins. The third, Praying for Others is viewed before the weekend away. Also includes on the training DVD is a skit, "How Not to Run Your Small Group". Finally, there needs to be Worship Leader Training and Task force Training. Here is a bit more about what each training covers:
Training 1 - Hosting Small Groups - 84 minutes Hosting an Alpha small group is very different from other Christian small groups, so it is important that all hosts and helpers attend this training before leading or helping on a course. It is vital that they return to this training on every subsequent course in the future. Just like a great athlete always attends training before their season starts to stay in top form, so we have seen that courses where the training is offered every session have better results on their course. This training has to be done before the start of your course.
Training 2 - Pastoral Care - 65 minutes The Pastoral Care talk is given to the hosts and helpers before the start of the course and helps them to understand more of the skill and heart behind the course. Take time to pray for potential guests and the fruitfulness of your Alpha course during this training session.
Training 3 - Praying for Others on Alpha - 67 minutes This session presents the Alpha model for praying for guests during the Alpha course. We also encourage you to take time to pray for each other during this session. This training is to be held shortly before the Weekend/Day Away.
Skit - "How Not to Run Your Small Group" In this skit, a creative small group scenario is set up. This skit uses humor to illustrate many of the improper ways to respond to potential guests.
Worship Leader Training Leading on worship on Alpha is more caught than taught and there are speicfic things to consider when leading. Here are a few resources to help you in preparing. Worship considerations and sample song lists.
Task Force Training There is not a corresponding DVD for this training, rather, the Alpha Director (or Administrator) of the course can use the information found in the Directors Handbook: How to Run the Alpha Course. to provide the training for all those who will be helping behind the scenes. During the training, make sure to address these topics:
- The importance of having an attitude of servant-hood and encouragement
- Explain each task and let them know who to talk to if they have a question or issue.
- Encourage each Task Force member to see how their job is evangelistic. This is important because sometimes these behind the scene jobs can seem to have less impact, but that could not be further from the truth.
