Step Three – Promote your Alpha course

Getting the word out about your course can be accomplished several different ways.

Have you heard about the Alpha Invitation? All over the USA, churches are working together to promote the course using billboards, bus stops and other media outlets. The Alpha Invitation has the ability to mobilize Christian churches, organizations and people in local communities to work together across denominational lines to see people introduced to Jesus at Alpha courses. Click here for more information on The Alpha Invitation.

Empower your church members to catch the vision
It is very helpful if the senior pastor endorses the course and gets behind the team in promoting it. Most people attend a course because they have been invited by a friend, so your church members are the best advertisement for the course. Before they will have courage to invite their friends and family members, they need to have a better idea of what to expect. We would recommend that you offer a "What is Alpha?" event for people to find out more about the course. Things to include would be:
  • Show the What is Alpha? video
  • Secure invitations for church members to give to friends
  • Discuss the role that prayer can have on the effectiveness of the course
  • Share one or two Alpha stories - here is a link to view stories from past Alpha guests
Feature Alpha at your church services a month before the start of the course.
Some churches actually call this their Alpha guest service and make the whole service geared to any guests that may be present. It is important to:
  • Give a brief description of the course and invite people to come to the Introductory Event (see below).
  • Include a couple of two to three minute testimonies from people who have had their lives transformed on an Alpha course. Contact your Regional Director or Alpha Advisor for suggestions on people who could come and share their stories.
  • Give out Alpha Invitations to guests and have a registration table set up where people can find you if they have further questions about attending the course.
Plan the Alpha Introductory Event
The Alpha Introductory event serves as the place for guests to get a taste of what the course is going to be like. Treat this night like a nice dinner party with background music and sincere hospitality.
  • There is no worship or small groups this night
  • The meal and general atmosphere should be high quality.
  • This is an opportunity for people to sign up to come back next week. Have a simple form ready for guests to fill out and begin to gather their information. This will help you in forming the small groups.
  • Having one or two people share briefly how their lives were changed through Alpha (if possible) or use video testimonies.
  • Features the talk "Is there more to life than this?" - with either a live speaker or use the Alpha DVD.
