What Others say

One reason we do live talks is because we can be current with what is happening in our community, nation, and world. The newspaper gives us a lot of fodder for each talk as illustrating what the world says or how the world reacts. It also allows us to share the very real stories of very real people in our community who’ve been through our Alpha course.

One reason we do live talks is because we can be current with what is happening in our community, nation, and world. The newspaper gives us a lot of fodder for each talk as illustrating what the world says or how the world reacts. It also allows us to share the very real stories of very real people in our community who’ve been through our Alpha course.  Just last week in the prayer talk, I shared a story about a man who took the Alpha course just a few months ago and who dismissed prayer as nice but not important … that is, until he lost his job. How he came to prayer during that time was a great illustration – and it was especially powerful to then turn to the group and mention he was in the room, hosting an Alpha group.

The live talks let us tailor the illustrations and applications to the immediate context and also allows people to begin to develop a relationship with a pastor (me) – you can’t imagine the number of times people have asked me to do their wedding, meet their relatives, discuss a question, etc, because they identify me as “their” pastor because they’ve taken the Alpha Course.

In a church of nearly 11,000, it gives us a place to begin to make the large church feel small and the live talks by a real live pastor seems to help us do that.
