Donny's Story

"I came to Alpha because I had a buddy who was very persistent and persuasive.  Because he just kept bugging me I finally told him, 'if it will get you to shut up, I’ll come and see what it’s all about.'

 

Spiritually, I was dead – I didn’t see any hope in life . I wanted my life to end basically. I was heavily addicted to methamphetamine, cocaine, using alcohol and marijuana. I just didn’t see any hope in life.

 

I’d go to church with my grandma when we’d go visit – maybe Christmas and Easter – but I was never a regular attendee.

 

While I was at Alpha, I realized that there was something more to life. I realized that there was hope out there and that hope was through Jesus Christ. I actually went to the Alpha weekend away high on methamphetamines.  I didn’t want to tell anyone, I didn’t want anyone to know that I was struggling with addiction.  It took me a couple of weeks to feel the power of the Holy Spirit's conviction to just let my small group know about my drug addiction. 

 

When I let them know, much to my surprise , they didn’t hate me. They didn’t look down on me. They weren’t mad at me. They just loved me and prayed for me even more.  That was a big thing for me because it showed me that regardless of where I was at, what kind of situation I was in, there were still people who loved me and cared for me. 

 

I’ve been sober since March, 2007. I know what it’s like now to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  I love going to church.  If you had asked me that before I would have told you that you’re insane.  I’m trying to start a youth group in my own home. What God is doing through me and to me is just amazing! It blows me away each and every day. "
