The Problem of Pain

CaseForFaithSo this week we began a study together on the book The Case for Faith, led by fellow intern Dave Hibbard. I was really excited about this study for a number of reasons, not the least of which being I enjoy discussing Apologetics and the like. And so this week we began with the question: What About Suffering? That's a really tough question to address, and not to mention one I could not sum up in just one blog post! But the question about suffering and evil is one of the most common objections Christianity faces. I wont go into great detail about our discussion, but there were a couple points we discussed I would like to share.

First, we need to remember that God is all loving and all just. He does love us with all that He is, and He wants the best for us. Some argue that because there is evil in the world, then God can't be all loving if He allows that. That's not necessarily true. There will be justice against those who commit those acts, but it will be in God's perfect timing, not our own.

Second, we need to remember that God is not unknown to suffering, and He can make any evil into something for good. Look at the greatest evil that has ever happened: the death of Jesus. This was God Himself, dying. I think as Christians we forget how horrible that part of the story is, but that's okay, because we focus on the rest, which is Christ coming back from the dead, and redeeming us! The worst event in the history of man, God turned into the greatest. And that holds true in our own suffering today.
God can redeem our greatest suffering too!

And that is just a little bit of what we talked about. There is so much more, but it would be a lot to type, soooo maybe another time. I am really excited about continuing this study, and seeing where God leads our time together.

What are your thoughts on the problem of suffering?  How has God redeemed suffering you've experienced in life?
