prayer is the key
Toby Allen from Manhattan, NY recently attended the 2009 National Alpha Conference in Florida. Here is his account of how the breakout sessions on prayer impacted him.
What was your prayer life like before attending the conference?
Getting better but still very hit and miss. I have had long periods of non activity and I know that it has adversely affected my relationship with God. I generally find it very hard to get into any kind of prayer routine.
How did the Lord use the 24/7 Prayer breakout talks in your life?
I was aware of Peter Grieg and the principles of 24/7 Prayer since I used to live in London and attended Holy Trininty Brompton while there. I have always found the concept of 24/7 Prayer very daunting. Surely you can’t expect people to be praying at 3am in the morning?
My wife and I are now living in New York and since arriving I have become increasingly aware that it a spiritually hard place to live. I have begun to realize that it is God and God alone who can break down the walls and prayer has to be the catalyst for welcoming him into the city.
What else did God use at the conference to speak to you?
- Seeing in real time the 1,000 Ugandan prayer warriors greet us on the video screen was such an inspiration. Those committed intercessors are praying for the development of Alpha here in the USA.
- Hearing about the Campus initiative is also such an amazing idea. I really am convinced that the students need to be drawn into the church before the United States suffers a lost generation just like the United Kingdom has suffered over the last three decades.
- During worship I could see and feel that the battle for New York City will only be won with arms held high in prayer like Moses.
How has your prayer life changed since the conference?
We have started to take steps to set up 24/7 Prayer in our local church in central Manhattan. The need is desperate and everyone I speak to is excited to make it happen. I have even started going to the 7.30 am prayer meetings! This is quite an effort for someone who is very certainly not a morning person. I am eager to go because I know it makes such a difference.
New York City needs God so badly and I am convinced that prayer is the key. The spiritual walls may be high around the hearts and minds of those here, but with perseverance the walls will come down.
