How do we attract younger leaders to Alpha?

We would love to reach younger people with our Alpha course. How do we attract more twenty and thirty year olds onto the leadership team? What does it take for them to be invested?

Here are a few thoughts from Kirk Wulff, Alpha leader from Christ Church, Overland Park, KS

1. Actively seek their feedback and input.

2. Give them a say in the look and feel of the course - for example, let them create the invitations or update the website.

3. Give them time in front of the course – do the welcome, worship, testimonies, skits instead of joke, find out if the jokes we tell are funny or appropriate to their age group.

4.  Allow them to have an active role in the planning of the weekend away.

5. Create the ambiance for the room that younger people would like.

If a 20 year old adult leads a group with a co-leader that is in their 50’s, this seems to work well. There seems to be an appreciation and more vulnerability with deeper sharing of life experiences.

What many churches have found is that  when they targeted the course to appeal to young adults, older adults came and still felt welcome.  However, if the course primarily accommodated older adults, the young adults did not continue to come.
